“Thriller” is a song by American recording artist Michael Jackson from his sixth studio album of the same name. It was released on January 23, 1984 by Epic Records, as the seventh single from the album. The song has appeared on mutiple greatest hits compilation albums from Jackson, including HIStory (1995) and This Is It (2009). It was written by Rod Temperton and produced by Jackson and Quincy Jones. The song, which has a voice-over rap from actor Vincent Price, had originally been titled “Starlight”.
Musically “Thriller” is a dance-oriented song; the song’s instruments include a bassline and synthesizer. Jackson’s voice is heard in a low register while a continuous arrangement of synthesizers are heard along the bassline. In the song, sound effects such as a creaking door, thunder, feet walking on wooden planks, winds and howling dogs can be heard, and the lyrics contain frightening themes and elements. “Thriller” received positive reviews from critics, though the song was outshone by its music video. “Thriller” became Jackson’s seventh top-ten single on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart from the album, while reaching the top of the charts in France and Belgium and the top ten in other countries.
“Thriller” was adapted into a highly successful music video, known independently as “Michael Jackson’s Thriller”. At fourteen minutes the video is substantially longer than the song, which ties together a narrative featuring Jackson and actress Ola Ray in a setting heavily inspired by horror films of the 1950s. In the video’s most iconic scene, Jackson leads other actors costumed as zombies in a choreographed dance routine. Though it garnered some criticism for its occult theme and violent imagery, the video was immediately popular and received high critical acclaim, being nominated for six MTV Video Music Awards in 1984 and winning three. Since its release “Thriller” has been often labeled the greatest music video ever made. In 2009 it was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, the first music video ever selected.

In late November 2001, the CBS television network aired a two-hour special in honor of Michael Jackson’s thirtieth year as a solo entertainer (his first solo single, “Got to Be There”, was recorded in 1971). The show was edited from footage of two separate concerts Michael had orchestrated in New York City’s Madison Square Garden on September 7 and September 10 of 2001. The shows sold out in five hours. Ticket prices were pop’s most expensive ever; the best seats cost $5,000 and included a dinner with Michael Jackson and a signed poster. Jackson reportedly earned $7.5 million for each of the two concerts, which is over $150,000 per minute.

“Human Nature” is an R&B song by American recording artist Michael Jackson. It was written by Steve Porcaro and John Bettis, and produced by Quincy Jones for the singer’s sixth solo album, Thriller (1982). Initially, Porcaro had recorded a rough demo of the song on a cassette, which was then given to Jones. Enjoying the demo, Jones had the ballad included on the Thriller album. The song was the last selected for the album, ousting “Carousel” from the final track listing.
“Human Nature” was released on July 3, 1983, as the album’s fifth single. Although not released in the UK, the song achieved chart success in the US. Reaching number two on Billboard’s Hot Adult Contemporary chart and number seven on the Hot 100, the song became Jackson’s fifth Top 10 hit from Thriller. In New Zealand the single reached number 11. The ballad garnered many positive reviews from music critics. “Human Nature” has been covered and sampled by numerous artists, including Miles Davis, SWV, Nas, Jason Nevins and Boyz II Men.

“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” is a song by American pop musician Michael Jackson, featured on his 1982 sixth studio album Thriller. Released as the fourth single from the album on May 8, 1983, the song peaked at number five on the American Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, topped the American Hot Black Singles and Hot Dance Club Songs charts and reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” was re-recorded with R&B artist Akon for the 2008 reissue album Thriller 25 under the title “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ 2008″ and was released as a single, charting at number 48 on the Billboard Pop 100 in the United States. It also appears in Grand Theft Auto Vice City on Fever 105.

The song ends with a chorus repeatedly singing “Mama-se, mama-sa, ma-ma-coo-sa”. The chant is a riff on one first used by Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango, who broke into the American market in 1973 with his classic “Soul Makossa”. “‘Soul Makossa’ was a big hit, in Africa, in Europe, and in America, where it came to be seen as one of the first disco records,” says Kelefa Sanneh of The New Yorker magazine. Sanneh adds that, “[Dibango] named his song after the makossa, a Cameroonian dance, but he stretched the word out, [and] played with it [so that it sounded like]: ‘Ma-mako, ma-ma-ssa, mako-makossa’.”

Jackson’s version of the Dibango chant has since been sampled and incorporated into other songs, including an interpretation by Rihanna on her 2007 single, “Don’t Stop the Music”, and the hook was also sampled in D12 and Obie Trice’s song “Doe Rae Me”.

The accident, witnessed by thousands of stunned fans at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, came at the height of Jackson’s fame, about a year after the release of his best-selling “Thriller” album. It marked what would be the beginning of serious, lifelong pain for Jackson, who had been treated for painkiller addiction and has been described by relatives and friends as being hooked on pain medication at the time of his death last month at age 50.

Jackson, who was photographed in an ambulance with a bandage on his head and his trademark sequined white glove on his right hand, required several surgeries and needed skin grafts to treat the injury.

In his autobiography, “Moonwalk,” he described the cause of the accident as “stupidity, pure and simple.”

As he described the accident, he wrote: “… bombs went off on either side of my head, and the sparks set my hair on fire. I was dancing down this ramp and turning around, spinning, not knowing I was on fire. Suddenly I felt my hands reflexively go to my head in an attempt to smother the flames.”

As a result of the accident, Pepsi gave Jackson $1.5 million, which he donated to a burn center named after him.
