Michael Jackson: Remembering the King of Pop

Sam remembers his time meeting and working with Michael Jackson through the years. First when Sam won Star Search and signed with Motown Records, several events and most notably when Sam served as the music supervisor for the Emmy-nominated television special "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration."

In late November 2001, the CBS television network aired a two-hour special in honor of Michael Jackson's thirtieth year as a solo entertainer (his first solo single, "Got to Be There", was recorded in 1971). The show was edited from footage of two separate concerts Michael had orchestrated in New York City's Madison Square Garden on September 7 and September 10 of 2001. The shows sold out in five hours. Ticket prices were pop's most expensive ever; the best seats cost $5,000 and included a dinner with Michael Jackson and a signed poster. Jackson reportedly earned $7.5 million for each of the two concerts, which is over $150,000 per minute. The show ranked first in black viewers over the decade ending 2008.

The concerts are mentioned in the VH1 biopic "Man in the Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story," which notes that the last of the two concerts wrapped up just hours before planes ran into the Twin Towers of Lower Manhattan's World Trade Center (see September 11th terrorist attacks). The concerts featured in the Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special were his last concerts ever as Michael would have embarked on a 50 date residency at the O2 arena, however due to his death the concerts were canceled.

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 June 25, 2009), often dubbed the "King of Pop," was an American recording artist, widely regarded as one of the greatest entertainers who ever lived. With his trademark black fedora and single, sequinned glove, his unique contributions to music and dance, along with a highly publicized personal life, made him a central part of popular culture around the world for four decades.

One of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, his achievements included multiple Guinness World Records—including the "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time"—13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles, and the sale of over 750 million records. He was also a notable philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to the 39 charities he supported, and raising more through his own Heal the World Foundation.

The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made his debut in 1968 as a member of The Jackson 5, beginning a solo career in 1971. His 1982 album Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time, with four others—Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995)—among the best selling. He popularized several physically complicated dance moves, such as the robot and the moonwalk, now iconic. He is widely credited with having transformed the music video from a promotional tool into an art form, with videos such as Thriller, "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" making him the first African American to amass a strong crossover following on MTV, and others, such as "Black or White" and "Scream", ensuring his popularity well into the 1990s.

Jackson's personal life generated significant controversy. His changing appearance was noticed from the early 1980s, his skin appearing paler and his facial features becoming almost androgynous. He was accused in 1993 of child sexual abuse, and though no charges were brought, his health suffered when he started using painkillers to cope with the stress. He married twice and fathered three children, one of them with a surrogate mother, actions that triggered more speculation about his life. In 2005, he was tried and acquitted of different child molestation allegations, which provoked a further decline in his health. He died in Los Angeles on June 25, 2009, aged 50, after suffering a cardiac arrest. His memorial service was broadcast live around the world and attracted an audience of up to one billion people.

    Well that was …
Well that was interesting. After seeing This is It I don’t believe for a second that Michael Jackson was not able to do the shows. Considering he was not putting full effort into rehearsals, preserving himself for the real deal, the dancing, singing etc was spectacular. It was 100% live & he sounded great, probably the best he has sounded since the Bad Tour. I don’t think MJ could give any more. He gave his all constantly, not just musically, but with his love & his donations of time and money.

    I agree with you …
I agree with you about the 30th Anniv. Special-you could see it. I wish he would have stepped away from the mainstream (work-related/away from big company bosses) to focus on his art, films, & music. It may have taken away the focus from always having to equal or top the huge persona in addition to the work. He should have fought for his right to privacy & freedom as a human being and sought more stable acquaintances & partners. Kept professionals out of private life. It was a caged life.

    Sam ! I know …
Sam ! I know someone who was very close to MJ. first, he didnt lie, he did things over a period of time, his surgeries ? over a period, as cosmetology and ageing has to be corrected simultaneously over time. am a doc too. listen to Bashir and THE FOOTAGE YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE SEEN. The analogy of light is well spoken in GOSPELS,ACTS,THE BIBLE. We all know. This was about gangs of various factor. MJ had to go through a series of procedures to even put on a smile and that my dear, you…

  8. chrisepete Said,

    Being that children …
Being that children were his greatest passion, and that very thing was taken and twisted and used against him, you can’t blame him for withdrawing. Is it remotely possible the mind-numbing drugs helped to relieve the pain he felt as a result of not being able to “share his light.”? Just food for thought.

  9. chrisepete Said,

    I get the light …
I get the light analogy, I really do, but it occurs to me that MJ was forced to stop sharing his light. Many people choose to only see he recreated a childhood in his adulthood for himself, when in actuality he recreated it to share with those who could not experience their own current childhood. It was an escape for children who were having their childhoods taken from them.

Amen. You spoke a mouth full of the truth.

  11. LAX324 Said,

    I would say 99% of …
I would say 99% of people in Hollywood are like MJ, celebs, groupies, wannabes all of them are insecure, unhappy and feel unloved. I’m not criticizing them just explaining. They seek out fame hoping it will make them feel secure, happy & loved but in the end it doesn’t & they end up alone, depressed, on drugs. Many of them need therapy & family/friends to keep them grounded. MJ didn’t get therapy and he wasn’t close to his family and I don’t think he had actual true friends in the end so…..

  12. LAX324 Said,

MJ was a child who …
MJ was a child who felt unloved and was insecure got famous too fast, equated that fame with love and wanted to retain his fame so bad because he didn’t want to lose that love. Thus he was willing to go to some bizarre lengths to keep his name in the news. He falls into the trap that 99% of hollywood do. Most celebrities are you know are insecure people who feel unloved. So want to be famous to get that fame, attention that they equate with love.

  13. LAX324 Said,

    Because of the way …
Because of the way his father made fun of him & failed to show him love & also the pressure from Hollywood & the media being critical, Michael grew into an adult who felt unloved, insecure and lacked confidence. He was perfect for Hollywood as they prey on people like that and people who are that insecure and lack confidence are the best celebrities because they seek out fame and will do anything to get famous and stay famous. Why? Because they want that love. They equate fame with love.

  14. LAX324 Said,

    Sam, wtf? The light …
Sam, wtf? The light? Please? Michael Jackson is the least mysterious and least complicated person on the planet despite the fact that people attempted to make him out to be that or how he tried to attempt to hide who he was . MJ told Rabbi Shmuley the truth about why he did the things that he did, why he performed it was all about getting love. The love he didn’t get from his father growing up and the false love that Hollywood gives out. Love you when you are hot and drop you if you are not.

  15. LAX324 Said,

    Yes, Bob Jones has …
Yes, Bob Jones has written a book about MJ. I forgot the name of it but you can search it on amazon and get it from a book store. Bob says it’s known that MJ was addicted to prescription drugs and when he confronted MJ about it Mj told him to mind his business. Jones says a lot of interesting things about MJ concerning his relationship with children. He says that Liz Taylor was a money grubber and paid by MJ for positive publicity. He also says MJ’s marriage to LMP was a sham.

  16. LAX324 Said,

    Being reclusive is …
Being reclusive is not healthy to a person’s psyche. I understand there is fear there of the outside world, but seriously it would be better to live in reality than to live in a fantasy world protected from everything. It seems the leeches were more apt to get him if he remain isolated and reclusive because he has no one on the outside to go to for help.

  17. slowmambo3 Said,

    To me, Michael …
To me, Michael Jackson became paranoid (if he was) because some people like you tortured, made fun of or betrayed him. I only saw this video of you, but it is obvious for me that Michael was 100 times more sensitive than you. You can make money by hurting or tarnishing other people who didn’t do any harm to you. I feel very uncomfotable that you analyzed him and it made all his fault that he died so soon. I wish you could be more sympathetic for him.

  18. bolloslush Said,

The rest of this ‘ …
The rest of this ‘interview’ is just a lot of psycho babble crap. A lot of it based on heresay & Bashir’s mockumentary.

  19. bolloslush Said,

    At least he is …
At least he is being honest & saying he did not know MJ well at all–rather than all those others who meet him for 2 seconds & claim to be his best friend.

  20. stonegrooved Said,

    What killed MJ …
What killed MJ wasn’t Bashir, the cops, the courts, or non-fans. What killed MJ were people who believed that worshipping him like a God couldn’t help but be good for him. People who believed that he was pure and innocent and couldn’t possibly do anything wrong. People that went hysterical when he was charged with child molestation and threatened to commit suicide if they didn’t allow him to go back to his decadent, destructive lifestyle. Sound familiar kids?

He died becuase he put TOO MUCH of himself in performing +at 50 yrs old his body couldnt take it. He did have a drug problem. But he did not die becuase he was a recluse. He had to protect himself from leeches, do you have any idea how many pple were suing him? He was in the guinness book of records for that too! He was a private person which angered the press so they made him out to be strange. he wasnt he was just different, unique, larger than life!
