July 7, 2009 Michael Jackson’s Public Memorial Service at Staples Center
When they said last week that Michael Jackson was having his public memorial service on July 7 at the Staples Center, I had no doubt in my mind that that was what I was going to do that day, also my birthday. When they announced an entry to the lottery, I was so fast to register. I was really hoping that I would be so lucky to get the ticket and spend my birthday with MJ. But only I wasn't so lucky.
So I was just planning on staying home to watch the memorial service via telecast since they said people without tickets couldn't get near the Staples Center and advised they should stay home. I thought to myself, even this way was still going to be the most memorable birthday yet. Yes. Even more memorable than my costume birthday party years ago. Why? Because it's Michael Jackson! King of Pop! Most famous human being in the whole entire universe! I was and still am honored to be sharing this day with him.
My dog Kato had a screening in Burbank and since I was already out and about, I thought, I'm just gonna drive by Staples Center anyway, just so I can be there to (somewhat) witness history. I wanted to just go there to take some pictures or something, to signify that I was there at the very moment. Just like they said, I couldn't get anywhere near where I wanted to be, which was that fans-signed/celebrity-autographed Michael Jackson poster they have hung outside Staples Center. Where I was able to get to, was where all the vendors were, along with all other fans that couldn't get any closer.
I got out of the car while my husband drove around (since you couldn't stop anywhere!) to get some Michael Jackson t-shirts (I was in the moment). There really were so many people showing their support to the Greatest Entertainer of All Time.
I can now say that I was there! I may not have been inside the Staples Center like I wanted to, but I was there in the area! It was truly special.
I filmed this to share with fans that could not have been there. Fans that couldn't have even been in Cali!
I will remember this day forever.

In late November 2001, the CBS television network aired a two-hour special in honor of Michael Jackson's thirtieth year as a solo entertainer (his first solo single, "Got to Be There", was recorded in 1971). The show was edited from footage of two separate concerts Michael had orchestrated in New York City's Madison Square Garden on September 7 and September 10 of 2001. The shows sold out in five hours. Ticket prices were pop's most expensive ever; the best seats cost $5,000 and included a dinner with Michael Jackson and a signed poster. Jackson reportedly earned $7.5 million for each of the two concerts, which is over $150,000 per minute.
